Artist Statement
My work has a strong natural organic quality and takes inspiration from forms in nature such as rocks, roots, shells, driftwood, ruins and fossils, all of which I enjoy collecting. The genre of my work is sculptural. Some pieces are unique totem like forms that suggest the skeletal frameworks found in nature. Others use the shape of vessels as a starting point, drawing upon years of experience as a functional potter. My artwork can be deceptive in its simplicity, and yet can explore the essential and underlying essence of structure and form, the patterns that are formed as light and shadow play across the rides, ribs and cornices to enhance the viewer’s experience as they move about the pieces.
The goal is to bring authenticity and individuality to each piece I create. I feel strongly that original art has an important obligation to create a counterpoint to the homogenization of the mass-produced world around us.
